Korneuburg

Though only 12 kilometres from the centre of Vienna, Korneuburg is a small, proudly independent town which serves as a gateway to Lower Austria, especially its famous Wine Region.  Culturally the town offers something for everyone: in April and May the various clubs show off their cultural and musical skills. Also in May, the old shipyard provides the stage for cabaret acts, while in June the courtyards (Höfe) of the old town, house the  traditional Höfefest. This features work by artists and artisans from across the area, from painting through pottery and leatherwork to photography.

June is also the month of the Stadtfest or town festival, with live music, food and a fairground, while in August the sound of open-air classical concerts can be heard in the town. The end of the year is marked by the traditional Advent Market, held in front of the town hall.

Business and commerce around the town square has much to offer, with a variety of shops and enticing pubs and cafes to while away the time. Shopping until late into the night is a feature on special days, while every week, on Tuesdays and Friday, the farmers market occupies the town square selling fresh food produce displayed by local farmers.

Sightseeing in the mediaeval old town can be enjoyed either independently or with a guided tour, beginning with the imposing 15th century watch-tower which stands within the neo-gothic town hall. A series of historical plaques explain the history and function of various buildings and features.

Sporting activities are not neglected in Korneuburg: swimming in the Florian Berndl bath with its pools, slides and outdoor relaxation area, or at the shipyard pool on the Danube; tennis courts and volleyball courts, as well as football pitches and a BMX and skateboard park, are some of the other facilities. Korenuburg also offer bicycles for hire, so that cyclists can explore the banks of the Danube or cross to Klosterneuburg using the picturesque chain ferry. There are endless possibilities. And for those just seeking peace and quiet, the Danube Au or riverside forest park, offers extended walks.

A town on the Danube offering so much variety, Korneuburg is always worth an excursion.
