Augustinerkirche

Die Kirche des 1338 errichteten ehem. Augustinerklosters erhielt ihre spätbarocke Gestalt durch den Neubau im 18. Jh. (1745-1763). Der auf das Mittelalter zurückgehende Vorgängerbau wurde abgebrochen. Für die Innenausstattung war im Auftrag des Korneuburger Konvents ab 1764 Franz Anton Maulbertsch tätig, der die meisten Altarbilder schuf. Ein Tafelbild stammt von Martin Johann Schmidt, dem Kremser Schmidt (Tod des hl. Franziskus). Krönender Abschluss des Innenausbaus war Hochaltar mit dem berühmten Maulbertsch-Fresko „Das letzte Abendmahl“. Der Altar der 1773 geweihten Kirche wurde aufgrund seiner illusionistischen Gestaltung rasch zum Publikumsmagneten. Eine Besonderheit ist auch das reiche Rokoko-Gehäuse der Orgel.

An der Fassade ist über dem Eingang das Symbol des Augustinerordens – ein brennendes Herz mit Pfeil – und die Figuren des hl. Augustinus und der hl. Monika, seiner Mutter, zu sehen. Der Turm erhielt 1898 einen neuen Helm nach Plänen des Rathaus-Architekten Max Kropf.

AUGUSTINIAN CHURCH

The church of the Augustinian Monastery, built in 1338, acquired its late baroque form through the new building in the 18th century (1745-1763). The previous building, which dates to the Middle Ages, was demolished. Franz Anton Maulbertsch, who created most of the altarpieces, was responsible for the interior decoration on behalf of the Korneuburg Convent from 1764. A panel painting is by Martin Johann Schmidt, the Kremser Schmidt (Death of St Francis). The crowning achievement of the interior design was the high altar with the famous Maulbertsch fresco "The Last Supper". The altar of the church, which was consecrated in 1773, quickly became a crowd puller thanks to its illusionistic design. A special feature is also the rich Rococo case of the organ.

On the facade, above the entrance, we can see the symbol of the Augustinian Order – a burning heart with an arrow – and the figures of St Augustine and St Monica, his mother. The tower received a new spire in 1898 according to the plans of the town hall architect Max Kropf.
